On the green in three but can the Liberty Movement sink the putt?

To all of the opponents of ObamaCare and its kissing cousin RHINOCare, which is best exemplified by the bill Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (MT) just released, CONGRATULATIONS.  It looks like the message got through, and all Republican Senators now oppose the healthcare fall-back option of the Obama Administration—an individual mandate—and will not support the Baucus Bill.  Which means, it looks like the Democrats will not have the 60 votes required to shut off debate and pass a bill.

This does not mean, however, that opponents of ObamaCare and RHINOCare are yet out of the woods.  Indeed, there is a chance that the Obama Administration is so desperate to avoid a political defeat on healthcare that it will offer enough concessions to entice a couple of Senators in the Republican Gang of Six (GOPGOS) to defect in the name of a “bipartisan compromise.”  Remember, four of the GOPGOS (Alexander, Bennett, Crapo and Graham) actually support some form of individual mandate as evidenced by their co-sponsorship of the Wyden-Bennett Bill (S. 391).  Moreover, both Finance Committee Members Olympia Snowe and Chuck Grassley are on record supporting some version of an individual mandate.

Based upon statements by Senator Snowe and Senator Grassley, there is now good reason to trust that they will remain opposed to any bill that emerges from the Finance Committee but the last thing opponents of RHINOCare should do is take their eyes off them.  Both Senators have intimated they are willing to continue talking to Chairman Baucus and other Finance Committee Members in search of a “bipartisan compromise” they can live with.  So, it would be wise to follow Ronald Reagan’s advise to TRUST BUT VERIFY.

The battle now turns to preventing the Senate from jamming ObamaCare down the throats of the American People under Reconciliation.  The end game is underway and the momentum is swinging toward the opponents of ObamaCare.  Or to mix metaphors, ObamaCare opponents are on the green, and all they have to do is sink the putt.  Can anybody here play this game?  After Saturday’s impressive demonstration on the National Mall there is no doubt the grass-roots movement for freedom, privacy and limited government can hit a very long drive and knows how to chip onto the green.  The question remains:  Can they putt?  Let’s hope so.

ASK A HORSE Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 Dr. Hunter, Excellent observations. Baucus 'plan' is one more attempt to force-feed health care reform regardless of public opposition. It looks like precious little more than another power grab rooted in elitist arrogance laced with maneuvering to garner votes - votes to remain in office. No compromise. Why should we believe people in government have more competence and understanding in health care matters than ordinary citizens and health care professionals? Not saying tere are not some savvy folks in halls of government. I worked with more than one. But - - - power is intoxicating. It is especially intoxicating when it includes power to confiscate other people's property (money) by legislation, taxation, and regulation. Why would we expect government to be more effective keeping insurance companies or other businesses more honest than we, consumers have power to keep them honest? Government-imposed documentation, alone, in almost every aspect of our lives may consume more billions of dollars than anyone knows how to measure accurately. How much quality improvement results? Again, all but impossbile to quantify or otherwise assess. Nothing is free, save, perhaps, unconditional love of dogs for their owners or mothers for children. Ardent government-imposed health care proponents and their ilk constantly berate health insurance providers and most businesses as greedy, pernicious, evil doers. Anyone who's ever run a business knows businesses can't survive without profit. Anyone who's ever run a business knows you have to be able to set prices for goods and services based on cost of doing business. Not telling you folks anything, I'm pretty sure. What to do? Laws are laws, not choices in grocery stores or Walmart. People lose all options except those allowed by law when health care is legislated. Reports of polls being accurate, some eighty percent of Americans are happy with their health coverage. No doubt things could be better. However, allowing Congress or commonwealth/state legislatures to revamp our entire health care system when eighty percent of consumers are happy is just plain ludicrous. Worse, it would be tantamount to surrendering our fundamental power of government by people. All politics is, essentially, local. Simplistic, but true. We keep our national government under control when we keep our personal representatives under control. Neither presidents nor governors have any powers. Lawmakers bring everything to bear. Governors and presidents can do nothing lawmakers do not allow them to do. Lawmakers are lawmakers by acceptance of their constituents. Hang Tough and Press On. Best Wishes, Len Ritchey
